What actually happens

Yes, Inside Out has post-credits material — and it starts almost immediately, less than half a minute after the story ends, so you have very little time to reach for your coat.

Rather than a single stinger, the film runs a series of short vignettes through and after the credits. Each one uses the same Headquarters set-up on a different mind: Riley's teacher, the school bus driver, one of the cool kids at Riley's new school, a dog, a cat, and a clown left over from Riley's childhood fears. The joke evolves as it goes. The human ones are variations on the film's premise, showing the same five emotions running smaller, sadder or more anxious control rooms — the bus driver's crew is pure rage, the cool kid's panics at being spoken to.

The animal ones are where it pays off. The dog's emotions operate in perfect harmony, all five delighted about everything, working as a team. The cat's emotions have no idea what is happening, no coordination and no plan, and the sequence ends on a shrug. It is the last laugh in the film and it is worth the wait.

There is no plot content in any of it — nothing about Riley, nothing setting up Inside Out 2, which would not arrive for another nine years. It is a comedy encore built out of the film's own machinery, which is arguably the best use of a credit sequence there is: proof that the premise generalises, delivered as a set of punchlines.
