Every emotion is a hidden silhouette
WHERE TO LOOK · The character designs throughout — clearest in silhouette at Headquarters
The five emotions are each built on a specific shape that encodes what they are: Joy is a star, Sadness a teardrop, Anger a fire brick, Fear a raw nerve, and Disgust a stalk of broccoli. It is the most load-bearing hidden detail in the film — it is why five brand-new characters are legible in the first thirty seconds, and why Anger's proportions read as furious before he opens his mouth. Design doing the work that dialogue would otherwise have to.
