The taxonomy
Every kind of hidden thing
Not all easter eggs are the same animal. A prop hidden in the corner of a frame and a composer sneaking a betrayal into a leitmotif are both secrets, but they reward completely different kinds of attention — one wants your pause button, the other wants headphones. So every entry in the database is tagged by kind, and these eight pages are the result: the whole catalogue re-cut by what sort of secret it is rather than which film it came from.
Categories overlap on purpose. A background poster quoting another director's film is a hidden detail and a reference, and it is counted in both — which is why the numbers below add up to more than the 1,429 eggs we have catalogued.
1,429 eggs · 76 titles · 479 confirmed with sources
Hidden Detail
Objects placed in frame and never pointed at — props, background art, a face in a crowd. The camera shows you; it just declines to mention it.
633 eggs catalogued
Reference
A nod out of the film toward somebody else's work: a shot restaged, a line quoted, a poster on a wall borrowed from another universe.
605 eggs catalogued
Behind the Scenes
Production facts that ended up inside the frame: an improvised take kept, a set rebuilt from an older film, a crew member's name on a mailbox.
399 eggs catalogued
Meta
The film knowing it is a film. Fourth-wall breaks, studio in-jokes, rights disputes turned into gags, actors ribbing their own careers.
384 eggs catalogued
Foreshadowing
The ending, planted before you can use it. Legible only on the rewatch, which is precisely the point of planting it.
346 eggs catalogued
Callback
The story referring to itself — a prop that returns three sequels later, a line answered by a different mouth in a different decade.
283 eggs catalogued
Cameo
A person who is not their character. The director in the lift, the novelist behind the bar, the actor who played the part forty years ago.
200 eggs catalogued
Music Secret
Score and soundtrack doing narrative work in secret — a motif that gives away a betrayal, a needle drop chosen for a lyric nobody hears.
