The Things You Missed

Callbacks across films and seasons

A callback is a story quoting itself. The distinction from a reference is direction of travel — a callback stays inside the film, the franchise, or the showrunner's own body of work. Long-running series turn these into architecture: a prop reappears, a shot is framed identically twelve years later, a line first spoken as a joke is repeated at a funeral. Individually they are small. Collected in one place, they show how deliberately a universe was built.
