Kubrick changed King's Room 217 to 237 at the request of the Timberline Lodge, whose management feared guests would refuse the real room. The invented number outlived the film: Lee Unkrich, an avowed Shining obsessive, buried three separate 237s in Toy Story 3 alone — the licence plate RM237, the screen name Velocistar237 and a security camera model designated OVERLOOK R237 — and it recurs across Pixar and beyond as shorthand for dread hiding inside something wholesome.
